Practice Tower
This is the jump tower, one of several training “units” installed near the airport. A heavy nylon rope was anchored to the ground behind the tower, threaded through a semi-circular tube at the top, and then attached to the trainee’s parachute harness. The slack portion of the rope was gathered at the anchor end, the trainee instructed to step or scoot from a mock doorway, and his descent was arrested a safe distance above the ground by the carefully measured and tested rope. Nylon stretches, by the way, which was helpful. 1959
